Google Is Expanding AI Overviews: What Does It Mean for Organic Search?

Table of Contents

Google is continuing to change the way AI appears within its search results, with some AI Overviews now automatically expanding into much larger responses.

Previously, users would often see a shorter AI-generated summary at the top of the search results, with the option to select ‘Show more’ if they wanted additional information.

For some searches, Google is now removing that extra step. Instead, the AI Overview can automatically expand into a much more detailed answer, taking up considerably more space on the search results page and creating an experience that looks increasingly similar to Google’s AI Mode.

For businesses relying on organic search traffic, it is another important indication of where Google Search is heading.

What Is Changing With Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews already provide AI-generated answers directly within Google Search, often using information gathered from several different web sources.

The latest change means Google can dynamically decide when a more comprehensive AI-generated response should appear.

Rather than presenting a shortened answer that users need to manually expand, Google may display the larger response automatically when its systems believe this will be more useful.

The expanded result can also include the ability to continue exploring the subject through follow-up questions. Google has said that these expanded AI Overviews currently appear only for certain topics and queries rather than every search.

If somebody has already started scrolling further down the page, Google also stops the Overview from expanding so their position within the results is not disrupted.

Why Could This Affect Organic Search Results?

The biggest change for businesses is simply the amount of space these AI responses can occupy.

Traditional organic search listings already compete with advertisements, shopping results, featured snippets, local results and other Google features.

A fully expanded AI Overview can push standard organic listings even further down the page. This means ranking highly remains important, but the position of your website within the wider search experience is becoming just as significant.

A website could technically rank strongly within the traditional organic results while still appearing much further down the screen than it would have several years ago.

Businesses therefore, need to think beyond traditional blue-link rankings alone.

Could Expanded AI Overviews Reduce Website Clicks?

There is naturally concern that providing increasingly comprehensive answers directly within Google could reduce the number of users who need to visit a website.

For straightforward informational searches, this is certainly possible. If somebody can find everything they need within an AI-generated response, they may have less reason to continue scrolling or select another result.

However, the picture is more complicated than simply assuming AI means fewer visitors.

Google continues to include links and sources within its generative AI search features, while AI-led searches can also encourage people to ask longer and more detailed questions.

Google has stated that AI features are leading users to search more frequently and explore subjects through additional queries.

The challenge for businesses is therefore making sure their websites remain visible during those journeys.

What Does This Mean for SEO?

SEO is increasingly becoming about earning visibility across several different parts of the search results rather than concentrating solely on achieving one traditional ranking position.

Google itself continues to recommend established SEO best practices for websites hoping to appear within generative AI experiences.

That means businesses should continue focusing on useful, original and accessible content rather than looking for a completely separate set of ‘AI SEO’ tricks.

Strong technical foundations, clear website structure, authoritative content and relevant internal linking remain important.

What is changing is the type of content that may perform particularly well.

Creating Content That AI Search Can Understand

Google’s AI search systems need to understand what your business does, what expertise you offer and how individual pages relate to particular subjects.

Creating generic content purely to target individual keywords is unlikely to provide the same long-term value as building genuine topical authority.

Businesses should focus on answering the questions customers actually have. This could include detailed service information, product guidance, expert commentary, case studies, comparisons, FAQs and supporting educational content.

Your website should make it easy for both search engines and potential customers to understand why your business is a credible source of information.

Original Content Is Becoming More Important

As AI makes it easier to summarise information already available online, original insight becomes increasingly valuable.

Repeating the same information found across dozens of competing websites gives Google very little reason to consider your website a particularly useful source. Businesses can instead strengthen their content with first-hand experience.

This might include:

  • Original industry observations
  • Customer case studies
  • Proprietary research or data
  • Expert opinions
  • Real examples from completed projects
  • Unique imagery and video
  • Detailed answers based on customer enquiries

These elements help demonstrate genuine experience and give search engines information that cannot simply be replicated from another website.

Businesses Should Think Beyond Rankings

Traditional rankings are not disappearing, but measuring SEO performance purely through keyword positions is becoming increasingly limiting.

Businesses should also look at overall organic visibility, conversions, leads, revenue and whether their brand appears within newer AI-driven search experiences.

Google has also been expanding the amount of information available to website owners about generative AI visibility through Search Console.

This should make it easier for businesses to understand how their websites are appearing as search behaviour continues to change.

Search Is Becoming More Conversational

One of the most significant developments is the gradual convergence between traditional Google Search and conversational AI.

AI Mode allows users to ask complicated questions, refine those questions and continue exploring a topic without repeatedly starting a completely new search.

Expanded AI Overviews bring some of that behaviour directly into the standard search results.

Instead of entering one keyword and selecting one website, a customer might now have a much longer interaction with Google before deciding where to click.

Businesses need content capable of supporting that type of customer journey.

SEO Still Matters in an AI-Led Search Landscape

Changes to Google Search can sometimes create the impression that traditional SEO is becoming irrelevant, in reality, the opposite is true.

Google’s AI systems still need reliable information from across the web in order to understand businesses, products, services and subjects.

The opportunity is shifting from simply ranking for a keyword towards becoming one of the trusted sources Google can understand, surface and reference throughout a search journey.

Businesses investing in strong websites, useful content and genuine authority will therefore remain best placed to adapt as search continues to evolve.
