SEO Costs UK Pricing Guide

Table of Contents

In this article we’re going to look at the cost of SEO in the UK in a completely unbiased, impartial way. The aim of this article is to make sure that you, the business owner, is able to make the best decision for your business when it comes to investing in SEO.

Now, you may be reading this thinking “Hang on, aren’t Outrank an SEO agency? Won’t they just try to sell me their services if I carry on reading?”, and you’d be right to be wary. But, that’s not what this page is designed to do.

We want to give you as much information as possible about SEO pricing in the UK, and the different types of payment structures available.

There are thousands of digital marketing agencies offering SEO (search engine optimisation) services throughout the UK alone.

The sheer number of choices may seem very overwhelming, but the overall industry tends to be dominated by around three types of SEO providers, all with very similar SEO pricing models.

In this article, we’re going to explain what these common pricing models and providers are, what you can expect from each of them, and give you all of the information so you can decide whether or not SEO is worth the investment for your business.

So, let’s dive right in!

The Main Types of SEO Providers in the UK

The most common types of SEO providers you’re likely to encounter are:

  • Marketing Agencies
  • Freelancers
  • In-House Teams

How are they different?

SEO AgenciesFreelancersIn-house Teams
If you choose an SEO agency (which is what we are) you will have a team of SEO experts who will run your campaign for you. This is the most common way for SMEs to ‘do’ SEO in 2026.Freelancers are SEO professionals who will do the odd job when they are needed. This is another common approach for SMEs, especially the smallest SMEs in the UK. Freelancing is ideal if you don’t have the budget to run monthly campaigns or pay someone in-house, but still want to do something. The final, most common type of SEO provider in the UK is an in-house team. These teams tend to be reserved for companies that are big enough that they can afford to have their own members of staff trained on SEO and to run campaigns for them.

This approach is probably the least common of the three, because it generally tends to be more expensive; SEO tools like Ahrefs and SemRush cost £1,000s per month). This means that, usually, you’ll only find in-house SEO teams in either large companies, or the largest SMEs in the UK.

UK SEO Pricing Structures

So, we’ve established that there are only three different types of SEO providers out there (only?!). You’ll also be glad to know that across these different providers, the same general pricing structures also tend to be offered:

  • Hourly
  • Monthly
  • Per Project
  • Productised SEO
  • On a Performance Basis

Let’s look at each one more closely:

Breaking Down SEO Pricing Structures

When it comes to SEO, the real challenge isn’t how much it costs, it’s understanding how those costs are actually structured. Different SEO providers package their services in different ways, and the model you choose can have a major impact on flexibility, results, and the management of your budget.

SEO Costs Per Hour

Charging an hourly rate for SEO is one of the most common pricing structures you’ll encounter in the industry, as well as the monthly rate.

Hourly SEO Costs can be ideal for your business if:

  • Don’t have a big budget but would still like to benefit from SEO
  • Are a local business in a niche that isn’t very competitive
  • Only have a small website that requires basic on-page SEO work or link building
  • Just want some advice from an SEO consultant
  • Already have a good presence online, but just want a professional team to maintain your brand and help you keep up with the competition

Monthly SEO

Monthly SEO is another very common pricing structure that most digital marketing agencies offer (including us).

With a monthly SEO pricing structure, you’ll pay a flat fee at the start of the month and our team of experts will speak to you, figure out your business goals, and create an SEO strategy that meets your budget. We will run through the strategy with you, making sure you understand what we propose to do, and that you are happy with it. Then we will deliver that strategy.

You’ll also receive monthly reports at the end of each month, detailing the work that has been carried out along with any achievements and analytics data.

This payment structure is ideal for businesses who:

  • Want a consistent SEO campaign to grow their business online
  • Are operating in a competitive niche
  • Want to attract the right customers to their website

This monthly pricing structure usually makes the most sense for most businesses and, yes, there’s no reason why you can’t get all of the above with an hourly rate. However, for a sustained SEO campaign, monthly payments are typically the most common way to go.

Note: Some agencies require you to sign lengthy contracts. At Outrank, we do not usually ask our clients to sign contracts. We believe that the quality of our work speaks for itself and the results we achieve are what allows us to keep our clients and with a 96% retention rate we must be doing something right.

SEO Costs Per Project

Another common way to pay for SEO is to pay a flat fee per SEO project.

‘Projects’ could include things like mapping keywords, carrying out technical SEO audits and providing reports; the list goes on. Usually these projects are pretty straightforward for the SEO professionals to carry out. This is why a flat fee can sometimes be quoted.

Productised SEO

The productised SEO approach is much less common now than it used to be, but it’s still knocking about. With this pricing structure, a company might offer to deliver a set number of words for a flat fee, or buy a specific number of backlinks for a set price.

An example of this might be:

  • ‘Totally Legit SEO Example Company’ will deliver 1,500 words of SEO content to you, for just £100.
  • ‘LinkyLinkLink Example Company’ will source and build 20 backlinks from relevant websites with a DR of 75+ for only £2500.

The examples above are just fictional examples to give you an idea of what productised SEO may be.

Performance-based SEO

Performance-based SEO is another uncommon pricing structure, and is when an SEO company might charge a flat fee to get a certain number of conversions and / or leads to your website in a given period of time.

Performance-based SEO payment structures are a very old and outdated way of paying for SEO services. This is due to a number of factors, such as developments in the SEO industry making it harder to properly track attribution, and the way users actually convert on a website.

The result of this payment structure is that you’re much more likely to spend your time arguing with your SEO professional over what leads you can actually attribute to the SEO campaign.

However, this model can still work for some business owners. If you’re particularly worried about getting over a certain number of leads (maybe due to a tight profit-margin) this approach could be worth trying.

Budgeting and What to Expect

Now we’ve got all that out of the way, let’s talk budgets.

Below we’ve put together a table that could help to give you a ballpark idea of what budget you may need when it comes to SEO.

Average UK SEO Monthly CostBusiness ModelWhat’s Usually Included
£150 – £500One person businesses, very local businesses with low competition and / or anyone with a small SEO budget.OK for basic on-site SEO, and for optimising your Google Business profile, building Citations etc. A dedicated SEO consultant will keep you on the right track, steadily improving on and strengthening your online presence.
£500 – £5000Most SMEs will fall into this bracket. At Outrank, we usually work with clients within this bracket.
At this budget bracket, you’re looking at a proper sustained SEO campaign that helps both established businesses and new businesses grow quickly.
This bracket typically includes all aspects of SEO running side-by-side; from usual copywriting to keyword mapping, and competitor analysis.
Alongside those, an effective PR and link building campaign will be carried out, designed to strengthen your domain, signalling to search engines that you are an authority in your niche and the right website to show for relevant searches.
Some agencies (but not all) may also have a Development and Design team in-house (like we do), who will help to make your website more attractive to potential customers.
£5000+Enterprise-level companies including very large corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions or those looking for multi and omni channel marketing services. This level of SEO is usually reserved for the largest companies, usually enterprise-level businesses who don’t have their own in-house resources.
The bigger the website, and the more customers it handles, the more complex the SEO strategy needs to be.
(Think big e-commerce brands, government websites etc).

Let’s Look at Them in More Detail

Given the fact that almost no one reading this article will be looking for information on how enterprise-level businesses use their massive SEO budgets, we’re only going to be looking at the first two in more detail.

£150 – £500 SEO Costs

As we outlined above, this price range is pretty standard for many small businesses in uncompetitive niches, or for businesses that tend to mostly operate in localised areas (think plumbers, locksmiths etc).

At Outrank, we have plenty of smaller clients with budgets under £500, and we achieve some fantastic results for them.

With this kind of budget, it’s also quite common for SMEs to engage with freelancers too, as freelancers can be more than capable of delivering SEO work on an ad hoc basis.

The only thing we will say is this: if you’re hiring freelancers to write content for your business, make sure you communicate with them as much as you possibly can. Freelancers are not as familiar with your business on an intimate level like you are.

So, communicate with your freelancers. Tell them what kind of message you want to get across to your audience. You’ve no doubt heard the phrase ‘You get what you put in’, and this is especially true with content (at all levels, not just freelancers). If you’re a particularly small company with a small-ish budget, it’s even more important that you get things right the first time.

Mistakes and edits can be costly to any business, but can be especially costly for small companies.

£500 – £5000+ SEO Costs

For most SMEs in the UK, a middle-of-the-pack SEO budget will likely be more than fine.

As we stated above, at Outrank, we offer a mid-range B2C, SaaS and B2B SEO agency service at cost-effective prices.

We can’t speak for other SEO agencies, but here’s a quick breakdown of what we can do for your business if you sign up with us.

If you are thinking about signing up with another SEO agency, we recommend that you ask them if they can match all that we are offering and beat our prices. We’re confident that, at Outrank, we can offer as close to an in-house service as possible, without all of the other costs that come with it, and whilst still having all of the tools that agencies have at their disposal.

Here’s what you get from Outrank:

  • A series of onboarding calls and meetings where we’ll discuss your business goals, target audience and ideal customer.
  • A dedicated strategy where you’ll be able to see and keep track of everything we’re working on, every month. You will be able to offer suggestions to the strategy too, so if you’d rather focus on something else, our team will work with you to make sure you are 100% happy with the strategy before we carry it out.
  • The strategy will contain everything involved in your budget, with breakdowns of how much of your budget each specific task is using, and notes on why we want to do each task, and what benefit it will have for your business.
  • We will track all relevant keywords using state-of-the-art tracking software. We will provide updates every month on how each term is performing, and feed back any successes such as Analytics improvements and keyword ranking improvements.
  • You will have direct access to a dedicated account manager, who will supervise your entire campaign and carry out the work. You are free to speak to the account manager whenever needed. If they are unavailable, they will work with you to schedule a call or meeting at a mutually convenient date and time.

Estimating Your SEO ROI (Return of Investment)

We understand that you’ll want to know whether or not it’s even worth your time and money running an SEO campaign in the first place.

Here’s some information on how you can work out ROI and figure out whether or not SEO is working for you, and what we can do to help figure it out:

Keyword Research

We can map out all of the relevant keywords that match what your business offers. We do this using an SEO tool called SemRush, as well as another tool called Ahrefs. These tools tell us how many monthly searches and organic traffic each keyword receives. Then we can add up the total search volume of all of these keywords together to get one big estimated number.

e.g. “All of your tracked keywords average 5000 monthly searches

Engagement Rates

We can then work out the average Click Through Rate (CTR) for all of the tracked keywords to get an estimate of the number of monthly visits your website could receive.

We can get CTR information from tools such as Ahrefs, SemRush, and Google Search Console.

e.g. “5% average CTR x 5000 monthly searches = 250 estimated monthly visits

Conversion Rates

We can then compare the number of monthly visits with your average Conversion Rate on Google Analytics to get an estimated number of how many conversions you might have with the SEO strategy in place.

e.g. “3.5% conversion rate x 250 estimated monthly visits = 9 estimated new leads

Lead-to-Sale Rate

If we have access to the data, we can also use your internal data to see how many of your current leads turn into sales (your lead-to-sales rate), and apply this to the new leads we estimate your business will receive.

e.g. “8% lead-to-sale rate x 9 estimated new leads = 1 estimated new sale”

Revenue

Finally, the revenue from these new sales on your website can be calculated by using your average order value (entirely business dependent and if we have the data available).

e.g. “£350 average order value x 1 estimated new sale = £350 estimated revenue

Our Strategies

When you choose us for SEO, you’ll have a full idea of how we plan to grow your business. For example, our strategies will outline which web pages on your site we will optimise first, which new web pages we will create along the way to target any relevant keywords, and more.

With a proper, well-thought-out SEO strategy in place, you should see a rise in total clicks and impressions over time. However, it’s important to remember that organic SEO is not straightforward, and is not a product for ‘overnight success’. Stranger things have happened, but you must think of SEO as a long-term way to grow your business. Other avenues, such as PPC, can provide short-term almost instant results if done right, but organic SEO is the long-game.

So, How much does SEO actually cost in the UK?

We hope that this article has cleared things up for you, and helped to give you a good idea of how much you might be expected to pay for a decent SEO campaign, regardless of who you choose.

Before you go, we’d like to give you some things to keep in mind:

  • You’ll want an SEO budget that matches your competition. If your business is facing tough competition in your niche, you’ll likely need a higher budget to take them on. If you’re paying £150 per month, and your competition is paying £1000 per month, it’s going to be very difficult to keep up with them.
  • Like we’ve mentioned above, SEO is a slow burner. It can take months to see results from organic SEO. If you want faster results, it’s worth spending in the initial stages, or look at other marketing products, like Pay-Per-Click Advertising.
  • Remember that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to SEO. Algorithms, platforms, and tools change every day. Generally, though, most SMEs should tend to do very well if their SEO campaign is organised properly and managed by the right people (like us!).

We should also say that organic SEO isn’t always the best choice for every single business. It entirely depends on your business model, what you want to achieve, and in what part of the marketplace it is you’re offering your products or services. We won’t go into that here as it’s a whole other topic of conversation (and a long one!), but it might be that PPC, email marketing, social media, or some other form of digital marketing is the best solution for your business.
